A Look Back at #rpEUROPE

2. – 4. Mai 2018

re:publica goes POP!

(Deutsche Version weiter unten)

Our field trip has come to an end and we’re back in Berlin again!
We’d like to take the opportunity for a little walk down memory lane with you and look back at the highlights from Dublin and Thessaloniki.

#rpDUB highlights

re:publica touched down in Ireland for a second time from 7 – 8 September. With the tech hub Dublin as our host, we got together for a total of 38 sessions to address topics like work 4.0, the organisation of digital companiesEdTech, the entrepreneurship of the Irish start-up scene, the importance of digital media or decentralised governments.

The discussion on the housing crisis, which was open to the public, was the highlight of the first day. But don’t just take our word for it, the Irish Times was on-site too and covered the panel.

Away from the main stages, the Lounge and the Breakout Area were home to exciting sessions, such as the Women in Tech meetup, the “Deep VR” experiment – a game controlled through breathing, or the europeanpa55port project from artist David Blackmore.

But that wasn’t it by a long shot! We took a much closer look at our time on the Emerald Isle in our newest blog post. We’d also like to invite you to visit our YouTube channel, where you can have a look through all of the talks from both stages.

#rpTHE highlights

Hopping onto the re:publica crew field trip transfer flight, we headed straight on to Thessaloniki in Greece for the very first re:publica in Southern Europe. From 11 – 13 September, we settled down in the Cinema Museum and Warehouse 1 to discuss the networking of European cities, open data as a driving force for more civic participation and social innovations, digital security for journalists, politics on WhatsApp, “The Great Wall” between media in Western and Eastern Europe, the struggle for digital rights and free spaces in Turkey, independent observatories on the web and lots more, exciting topics that you can read up on here. And, of course, we recorded all the #rpTHE talks from Stages 1 and 2.

We held nine of our sessions while sailing through the port on our re:boat, and the Communitere Mobile Makerspace was a special meeting point for our community throughout the conference. Thessaloniki introduced us to the leading figures from the innovation ecosystem, who have played a major part in defining the digital development of the city. This included: TIFD, Athlenda, Fieldscale or OKThess!.

Also a first: The cooperation with the Agora Reworks Festival in Thessaloniki. re:publica CEO Andreas Gebhard, designer Norman Palm and Anastasios Diolatzis, co-founder and music director at Agora Reworks, met for the “A new connected world: The rise of networks” panel.

re:connecting EUROPE…

… was the main theme for both the #rpDUB and #rpTHE conferences. Thanks to support from the German Federal Foreign Office, re:publica carried the idea of a connected Europe to Dublin and Thessaloniki. We spoke with players and stakeholders from the creative industry about the common challenges and solutions currently facing activists, founders, entrepreneurs and artists in Europe. It was a truly special and fun time for us and we hope it was for you too! Tell us more about your experience of our field trip in our feedback survey and get the chance to win a ticket for the next re:publica in Berlin, from 2 – 4 May 2018, with its POP – Power Of People motto.

We’re already looking forward to #rp18 and to seeing you there!

Until then,
Your re:publica team ♥

re:connecting EUROPE…

– 4. Mai 2018, mit dem Thema POP – Power Of People.

Euer re:publica Team ♥
